Switzerland with Teenagers: Our 10-Day Itinerary Through the Swiss Alps

If there's one trip I'll be talking about for years, it's our 10 days in Switzerland. Our family explored the country by train, and from the moment we arrived, we understood why it's one of Europe's most unforgettable destinations. We hiked beneath the Matterhorn in Zermatt, cruised across crystal-clear lakes of Lucerne, wandered through storybook towns of Interlaken, and took some of the most scenic train rides we've ever experienced. If you're looking for a detailed 10-day Switzerland itinerary, I'm sharing everything we learned from where to stay and what to do to the tips that made traveling with the Swiss Travel Pass incredibly easy.
I have traveled all around Europe from exploring Italy, to taking a cruise around the French and Italian Riviera and wandering through the Christmas Markets of Germany but this was my first visit to Switzerland. Being from Colorado, my family loves the outdoors and the scenery in Switzerland seemed right up our alley! After visiting this alpine wonderland, I quickly understood why it's on every traveler's bucket list. If you're considering a trip to Switzerland, here's exactly how we spent our 10 days and why I think the Swiss Travel Pass is one of the best travel investments you can make.
Why the Swiss Travel Pass is Worth Every Penny
Before I dive into our itinerary, let's talk about the Swiss Travel Pass because, honestly, it made our trip effortless. We purchased the First Class Swiss Travel Pass, and I would absolutely do it again. We traveled throughout Switzerland from town to town with ease thanks to the Swiss Travel Pass. It was so easy and convenient!
Switzerland's train system is one of the best in the world. The trains are clean, incredibly punctual, comfortable, and take you almost everywhere you want to go. We never rented a car or took a taxi which provided a truly stress free vacation experience.
With the Swiss Travel Pass, you simply hop on trains, buses, and boats without the need to purchase individual tickets each time. It also includes free admission to many museums and discounts on many mountain excursions.
Why I loved First Class
We purchased the first class Swiss Travel Pass and after spending 10 days traveling across Switzerland, I can confidently say it was one of the best decisions we made. Because we were changing destinations every few days, we spent a lot of time on trains, and first class turned those travel days into one of my favorite parts of the trip. Instead of feeling crowded or tired between destinations, I could settle into a comfortable seat, enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, and watch Switzerland's breathtaking landscapes through oversized windows. By the end of our trip, I wasn't just looking forward to arriving somewhere new, I was looking forward to the journey itself.

Tips for Using the Swiss Travel Pass
Here are a few things I learned about the Swiss Travel Pass:
Download the SBB Mobile App before your trip. It provides real-time train schedules, platform numbers, and any service updates.
Add your Swiss Travel Pass to your phone so it's always ready if a conductor asks to see it.
Seat reservations usually aren't required on domestic trains, and honestly not necessary. Premium routes like the Glacier Express and Bernina Express require seat reservations.
Travel light whenever possible. Swiss train stations are incredibly efficient, but you'll appreciate having manageable luggage when changing trains.
Zurich, Switzerland: Where to Start Your Trip
We began our Switzerland vacation in Zurich, and it exceeded my expectations. We were only there for one night but I loved the old-world feel here. We arrived just in time for an afternoon stroll through beautiful Old Town (Altstadt), before heading to dinner at Cantinetta Antinori. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for a good, authentic Italian meal. Our food was delicious and fast!
Pro Tip: If you want to sit outside, make a reservation ahead of time.
Even though our time in Zurich was short, this city immediately won me over. We loved wandering in and out of boutiques, admiring Swiss watches and sampling chocolate that lived up to every bit or bite of the hype! If you have more time in Zurich, Rhine Falls is a popular day trip as well as the Lindt Chocolate Factory which offers great tours.
Zurich is the perfect gateway to Switzerland. It's home to the country's main international airport, so it's where most travelers begin their journey. If time allows, I recommend spending a day or two exploring Zurich before continuing on your Switzerland vacation. Once you're ready for the mountains or other towns, simply activate your Swiss Travel Pass and board a train to your next destination.
Lucerne: Mountain Views That Don't Seem Real
If someone asked me which destination surprised me the most, I'd probably say Lucerne.
Nestled along one of Switzerland's most beautiful lakes and surrounded by mountains, it's postcard-perfect in every direction.
We stayed at the beautiful Grand Hotel National, directly on Lake Lucerne. Our Rooftop Suite offered panoramic lake and mountain views that were absolutely incredible. Waking up every morning to that scenery is something I'll never forget.
Mount Pilatus
One of the highlights of our entire trip was visiting Mount Pilatus. To reach the summit, we rode the world's steepest cogwheel railway, climbing through forests, cliffs, and dramatic alpine scenery before arriving at spectacular panoramic views. Standing at the top felt like being on top of the world. I am from Colorado and I have the Rocky Mountains in my backyard but the Swiss Alps are in a league of their own! They are simply unlike anything I've ever experienced. The view from the top of Mount Pilatus is incredible. Looking down, you can see the bright blue waters of Lake Lucerne winding through the valley, with the city of Lucerne along the shoreline and mountains stretching as far as you can see.

Europe's Longest Summer Toboggan Run
At the top of Mount Pilatus there are a host of adventures await you. We decided to do the Frakigaudi Summer Toboggan. At 1,350 meters or 4,429 feet, it is the longest summer toboggan run in Europe. My teenagers loved racing down the mountain, and honestly, so did my husband and I! It was the perfect mix of excitement and incredible scenery.
Pro Tip: This is popular and lines can get long. Do this first thing in the day to avoid the heat and lines.
Cruising Lake Lucerne
One of the best ways to slow down in Switzerland is with a scenic cruise on Lake Lucerne. After days filled with hiking and adventure, it was the perfect way to relax while taking in the mountain views from the water. We happened to be in Lucerne during a heat wave, so the cool breeze off the lake felt especially refreshing. It was the kind of experience that reminded me you don't always have to be on the go to appreciate Switzerland's beauty.
Interlaken: Switzerland's Adventure Capital
If your family loves outdoor adventure like my family, then Interlaken absolutely belongs on your itinerary. Surrounded by two beautiful lakes and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in Switzerland, it quickly became one of our favorite stops.
What makes Interlaken such a smart home base is its location right between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, with train and boat connections fanning out in every direction. You can wake up in Interlaken and be somewhere completely different by mid-morning, then be back in time for dinner. Grindelwald and Wengen are both under 30 minutes away and give you those postcard views of the Eiger. Lauterbrunnen, with its 72 waterfalls tumbling down the valley, is just a 20 minute ride. Thanks to the Swiss Travel Pass, you can easily explore all of these incredible destinations without ever changing hotels. Interlaken is the perfect home base, giving you the freedom to experience the best of the Jungfrau region while only unpacking once.
Mürren
One of the coolest experiences was taking the world's steepest cable car up toward Mürren, a charming car-free mountain village perched high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley. No cars. No traffic. Just incredible mountain views and peaceful alpine charm. It felt like stepping into another world.
From Murren, you can continue your journey up to Schilthorn/Piz Gloria, where you'll find a rotating panoramic restaurant and the famous Bond World 007 exhibit, inspired by the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service. On the way, make a stop at Birg to experience the Thrill Walk, a steel-and-glass walkway clinging to the side of the mountain that offers spectacular views and a bit of an adrenaline rush!
Private E-Bike Tour
E-bike tours have become one of our family's go-to ways to explore a new destination. We love how fast paced and fun they make getting to see a new place! So when we got the chance to do a private e-bike tour of Interlaken, we jumped at it. Our guide took us far beyond the typical tourist stops, showing us hidden gems, quiet villages, and scenic countryside, eventually leading us to beautiful Lake Brienz, where we couldn't resist jumping in for a refreshing swim. Sometimes it's these unexpected moments that become your favorite memories.
Paragliding Over Interlaken
Without question...The highlight of the trip for my husband and our teenagers was paragliding. My husband and our adventurous teenagers took to the skies, soaring thousands of feet above Interlaken's emerald valleys, crystal-clear lakes, and snow-capped peaks for a 30 minute flight they they described as "hands down the best part of their trip!" They couldn't stop talking about the views, the feeling of flying, and how they wished they could turn right around and do it again.
They all agreed it was one of the most incredible experiences of their lives.
Being one who is not a fan of heights, I watched from Höhematte Park, where all of the paragliders land, which is the best spectator spot in Interlaken. It was fun watching the colorful gliders circle overhead and being able to watch my family touchdown!
Interlaken is considered one of the best places in the world to paraglide, and after witnessing it firsthand, I completely understand why. There isn't another view quite like it. Floating above Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, surrounded by the iconic peaks of the Jungfrau region, is an experience that is impossible to put into words.
Zermatt: The Matterhorn Lives Up to the Hype
After leaving Interlaken, we weren't if we woulfd be able to top that part of the vacation...
Then we arrived in Zermatt.
The Matterhorn is every bit as magnificent as I imagined.
Alpen Resort Hotel
We stayed at the Alpen Resort Hotel, and waking up each morning to views of the Matterhorn from our bed never got old. The hotel's location couldn't have been better. Tucked at the base of the mountain and just a short walk from the heart of Zermatt, it made exploring the village and catching the Gornergrat Railway incredibly convenient. After long days of hiking, we looked forward to unwinding in the hotel's spa and hydrotherapy circuit, the perfect way to relax and recharge before setting out on our next adventure.
Riding the Gornergrat Railway
Zermatt in the winter means skiing but in the summer it is all about hiking. We decided to take the Gornergrat Railway up top the top of the peaks for breathtaking views and endless hiking trails. The Gornergrat Railway is highest open-air cog railway in Europe and ended up being one of the most iconic experiences of our entire trip. Afterall, Disney made a ride after this exact mountain! The journey to the top took about 33 minutes, but we spent the whole ride glued to the window. . The Matterhorn stayed in view for almost the entire ascent. If the Matterhorn has been on your bucket list, this is exactly how I'd recommend experiencing it.
Hiking to Riffelsee
At the summit, we hiked to the famous Riffelsee Lake. On a calm day, the lake perfectly reflects the Matterhorn, creating one of the most photographed scenes in Switzerland. It truly is one of those places that leaves you speechless. My sons both agreed that hiking with the Matterhorn towering in the background was their favorite hike of the entire trip. We found ourselves stopping constantly and not because we were tired, but because the views just kept getting better. With trails ranging from easy scenic walks to challenging alpine hikes, there's something for every age, ability, and adventure level.
Final Thoughts
Switzerland isn't just beautiful, it offers an incredible balance of adventure, luxury, efficiency, and natural beauty. Whether you're traveling as a couple, with young children, or, as we did, with adventurous teenagers, there's truly something for everyone.
From wandering the streets of Zurich to cruising Lake Lucerne, racing down Europe's longest toboggan run, hiking beneath towering alpine peaks, paragliding over Interlaken, and standing in awe of the Matterhorn, every day brought a new memory we'll never forget.
